The British Coatings Federation has some good tips for Surface Preparation here. Not sure whether you need a matt or silk finish? A matt finish has a flatter more velvet-like appearance, while silk has a sheen and reflects the light better. Do I need a primer on a wall or ceiling? It’s always wise to use an under coat unless you’re overpainting a similar colour and finish. Our All purpose primer/undercoat is recommended. Before applying emulsion to a previously painted wall or ceiling, ensure it is clean and dust free. Sugar soap is ideal for cleaning previously painted walls. Check for cracks or holes and fill with appropriate filler. Rub down and remove dust. Apply paint in smooth strokes with a roller or brush and allow to dry before applying a second coat.
